Fungicidi e insetticidi ma soprattutto erbicidi: queste le sostanze più comunemente rilevate dalla rete di controllo ambientale nelle acque superficiali e sotterranee italiane. Sono utilizzate in agricoltura e, complici le piogge, vengono trasportate dal suolo alle acque sotterranee e superficiali.
In Italia, solo il comparto agricolo impiega oltre 300 diverse sostanze, per un quantitativo pari a circa 150.000 tonnellate all'anno.
Questi alcuni dei dati contenuti nel Rapporto 'Monitoraggio nazionale dei pesticidi nelle acque', realizzato dall'Ispra (Istituto superiore per la protezione e la ricerca ambientale), sulla base delle informazioni fornite dalle Regioni e dalle Agenzie regionali e provinciali per la protezione dell'ambiente.
Ben 118 i tipi di pesticidi individuati nelle acque italiane ambientali che, concepiti per combattere gli organismi nocivi, sono potenzialmente pericolosi anche per l'uomo.
Nel biennio 2007-2008, si legge nel Rapporto, sono stati valutati 19.201 campioni, provenienti dalle 18 regioni che hanno trasmesso i dati. Oltre alla copertura del territorio nazionale, tuttora incompleta, ci sono notevoli differenze tra le regioni: il monitoraggio risulta, infatti, più efficace al Nord mentre al Centro-Sud è spesso limitato a poche sostanze e, pertanto, poco rappresentativo.
Nel 2008, in particolare, le indagini hanno riguardato 3.136 punti di campionamento e 9.531 campioni. Rinvenuti residui di pesticidi nel 47,9% dei 1.082 punti di monitoraggio delle acque superficiali, nel 31,7% dei casi con concentrazioni superiori ai limiti delle acque potabili. Nelle acque sotterranee, contaminato il 27% dei 2.054 punti, nel 15,5% dei casi con concentrazioni superiori ai limiti.
Le sostanze più presenti sono gli erbicidi come la terbutilazina, utilizzata nelle coltivazioni del mais e del sorgo soprattutto in Lombardia, Piemonte ed Emilia Romagna. Alcune sostanze sono state riscontrate con una frequenza maggiore rispetto al passato, come il fungicida carbendazim e gli insetticidi metomil e imidacloprid. Nella maggior parte dei campioni, inoltre, erano presenti contemporaneamente più sostanze, fino a un massimo di 15.
